Week 1 Class Descriptions

Basic Outdoor and Survival Skills

Ever wondered if you could survive living in the outdoors, or do you just want to be able to enjoy a camping experience without looking like a novice? This class will teach and equip students on how to appreciate and learn basic skills to use in the great outdoors and how to survive in an outdoor setting. Skills that will be taught include: using a compass, basic orienteering, leveraging nature’s clues to finding your way in the wilderness, learning how to find and make drinkable water, woodcraft, learning how to tell the weather, and setting up a tent. Students will also learn how to make a shelter using natural materials, avoid getting injured or hurt in the outdoors, make a bow and arrow, identify plants and critters, keep their body temperature near 98.6 degrees, cook and identify edibles in the outdoors, as well as many more practical and campcraft skills.

Beginning Arts and Crafts: This beginning arts and crafts class will use various mediums to produce 5-7 projects during the week. The students will paint, do mosaics, learn macramé, do weaving, work with sand, and make art using the sun. This class is best for students who have not taken my Beginning Art class in the past.

Beginning Cooking: This class will help the students read a recipe and work together to create a yummy treat. They will make items suitable for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, or snack. The students will try everything they make, and sometimes they will bring samples home. They will receive a cookbook at the end of the week. **Because we will be working with foods that contain the major food allergens, this class is not recommended for children with food allergies.**

Can You Kick It?!: Come out and "kick it" with Mrs. Sivik this summer! Get moving during a fast pace, high energy kickball camp designed to build endurance, strength and communication skills. Enjoy the summer sun, spend time with your friends, exercise and have a blast, all while learning the basics of kickball. Remember, you don't have to be an athlete to KICK it!

Character Crafts: If you like to be read exciting stories and to create cool crafts, this is the class for you. Each day we will read silly, fun, or famous story books and make creations based on the characters and themes in the story. Be ready to hear some funny voices during read-alouds and to use a ton of craft materials to make cool stuff!

Doll House Builder: Come use your imagination and your creativity to build your own doll house! Design and decorate your interior and exterior walls, fill the rooms with handmade furniture, and make your house come to life with some handmade dolls.

Experimentation Station: Have you ever wanted to become a scientist or engineer? In this class, we will do experiments to figure out the answers to our wildest questions! We will be designing parachutes, building balloon rockets and catapults, creating filtration devices to clean water, modeling the forces in bridges, and much more. This class is perfect for students who want to think scientifically, build models, and learn about the world!

Field Hockey: Let’s Hit It!: How hard can you hit?! Did you know Miss Nalewanski hit her way all the way onto the Virginia state team and went to Nationals in high school to play field hockey? She is calling female field hockey players of ALL levels to come learn and expand their knowledge of the game and the skills needed to play! Through games and practice, players will work to learn about everything from the basics of handling a stick to dribbling and passing to fun, more challenging tricks. No experience is needed--just love for learning a new game and fun in the sun with friends! ALL ARE WELCOME! *Each student will need their own field hockey stick (can be rented or purchased), field hockey shin guards, a mouth guard, and field hockey goggles or cage. Either tennis shoes or cleats should be worn.*

Fun with Friends: This is a class where kids can do what they do best--be kids! Students will do a mix of arts and crafts, games, play, songs, and exploration.

Lego Master Builders: Calling all Lego enthusiasts! This class is here to unlock your master builder potential. We will be working with a highly sophisticated inter-locking brick system to take on challenges both big and small. We will tap into our imaginations to develop something awesome!

Minecraft EDU 1: Beginners: Minecraft EDU is a controlled online world that is virtually endless because it requires players to continually design, seek, explore, and even defend what they have created in a multiplayer environment. During this session of Minecraft EDU: Beginners, your children will be learning the basic skills needed to build a sustainable city.

Minute to Win It!: How many small balls can you move from one plate to another in one minute? 10, 25, 30? Do you think you can stack 45 empty cups into a pyramid in one minute? Come and find out how quickly a minute can pass by. We will learn fun games you can try with your friends and family. We will make estimates of the activities and learn how to create our own Minute-To-Win-It games to share with others.

Moving Up in Reading

Reading is a blast! Come work with old and new friends to explore the wonderful world of reading. Work on reading strategies to help prepare you for the upcoming year and blow your new teacher away. We will focus on building fluency and comprehension through interactive games and reading activities.

Outdoor Games: Do you love playing outside? Do you enjoy learning new games? This class will teach you fun, outdoor games you can play by yourself, with your family, and with your friends. Come find out what new games you can play with your friends at recess next year!

Science Fun!

In this class we will explore the many experiments that science has to offer! This camp will be geared to beginning scientists. We will do a variety of experiments that will get us interested in the many wonderful things we can learn.

Slime Time!: The slime craze continues in this week-long SLIME adventure! Make a new slime every day, learn a science concept or two, and create fun slime projects! Be sure not to wear your favorite outfit...this could get messy!

Soccer FUNdamentals: Come learn the fundamental skills to be successful in soccer! This class will take place outside when appropriate. Students will participate in games, scrimmages, and drills to hone their individual and team skills. Come join the FUN! **Students will need to provide their own ball and shin guards. Cleats are optional.**

Step Up to K: Get ready for the Kindergarten experience at Chesterbrook by Stepping Up this summer! This class is for any student starting Kindergarten in the fall. Get a feel for the experience through stories, group activities, dancing, music, academics, play, and fun!

Sweet Tooth: What's more refreshing on a hot summer day than some ice cream? We will be learning how to make homemade vanilla and chocolate ice cream, among other no-bake desserts, including yogurt parfaits and granola energy bites. We'll also be making the classics: chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and more! If you want to practice your baking skills and share your awesome desserts with your family, this is the class for you!

Water Water Everywhere!: Do you like getting wet? Do you like science too? Let's combine them both and see what water can do! In this class you will be a scientist and set up experiments, and you'll even get to see how water can be used to make your own paper! We'll also have fun with water games when those summer days get hot!
