Week 3 Class Descriptions

Baking Fun: Do you have a sweet tooth? If you do, then this class is for you! We will be baking lots of different items including cookies, muffins, breads, cupcakes and cakes. We will also be decorating some of our creations! Students will get to taste and take home all of their baked goods. **Because we will be working with foods that contain the major food allergens, this class is not recommended for children with food allergies.**

Beginning Arts and Crafts: Slime, pom-poms, glitter, and more! Channel your creativity by making beautiful crafts to take home and share with your family. This class is perfect for younger students who want to practice their coordination and fine motor skills. Let's learn to release our inner artist, work together, and make friends!

Camp Hogwarts: Calling all "Potter Heads” (fans of Harry Potter). This is a great camp for girls and boys who loved the Harry Potter series. Explore the magic of creativity through games and crafts, including making your own wand. We will even end the week by playing Muggle Quidditch!

Character Crafts: If you like to be read exciting stories and to create cool crafts, this is the class for you. Each day we will read silly, fun, or famous story books and make creations based on the characters and themes in the story. Be ready to hear some funny voices during read-alouds and to use a ton of craft materials to make cool stuff!

Chesterbrook Hoops: Do you like to shoot hoops and hit the court to practice your skills? Come join Miss Nalewanski on the court to LEARN and PRACTICE dribbling, shooting, passing, and more! Go Nuts for Nature!: In this class, we will explore the great outdoors and learn all about the environment around us. We will observe different wildlife, create projects from nature, conduct experiments, and even learn fun games to play outside!

I'm an American Girl: Let's learn about history the American Girl way! By looking at characters given to us by the American Girl series, we will explore how times have changed for girls from the past to the present. To get a deeper understanding of living in the past, we will talk about clothes, taste foods, and create crafts to get a true sensory feel of history. The camp will conclude with a girl and doll tea party on the last day. This camp is designed to help girls look towards the future and build self-confidence by understanding the past.

Kindergarten STEM: Calling all up-and-coming kindergartners who love science, technology, engineering and mathematics! In this class we will learn about the process that engineers go through, how to identify problems, and design/create solutions to those problems. During this week we will face tiered challenges that will be solved with the help of our new friends and our imaginations.

Launching into First Grade!: This class is perfect for rising first graders who are still working on the basic foundational skills in both reading and math. Half of the class will focus on reading and the other half will concentrate on math. Reading activities will be focused on the stepping stones of learning to read: phonics, phonemic awareness, and high frequency words. Math activities will emphasize number sense and algebraic thinking which are foundational math skills.

Magic of Music: No talent required! Music is a lifelong experience and one that deserves to be enjoyed! This class will cover a broad exploration of various musical instruments, the science of sound, how music and math are intertwined, how making music is different from making noise, and music history. Students will experience African drumming, American Indian flutes, and Appalachian musical instruments. They will also learn basic piano keyboard and guitar skills and listen to various styles of music by a variety of artists. By the end of the week, students will have a greater appreciation for the magic of music and its place in their lives for as long as they live.

Make A Difference: This class will focus on giving back to our community and beyond. Students will enjoy presentations from some of our community service leaders (first responders, animal rescue, Red Cross, shelters, etc.). We will learn about the many ways each child can make a difference, and as a group, we will actively come up with ideas to improve our school and community. The class will be anonymously sharing random acts of kindness throughout the week. As the week comes to a close, students will complete a service project in our community.

Minecraft EDU 3: Advanced Adventurers: Minecraft EDU is a controlled online world that is virtually endless because it requires players to continually design, seek, explore, and even defend what they have created in a multiplayer environment. During this session of Minecraft EDU: Advanced Adventurers, your children will be developing their higher-level thinking and collaboration skills as they create and defend an advanced level civilization.  They will also be using a program called “Code Builder” to enhance their creativity and design.

Paint a Poem: If your student loves to write or wants to write, then this is the class for them! Poetry is like painting with words. Students will read poems together and independently focus on using their senses to create lyrical poems. Students will write a different type of poetry each day and will put their poems into a published book at the end of the week. Participants will use their five senses to observe nature and then will use these experiences as inspiration for their writing. Music, art and snacks will also be used to stimulate their thought processes.

Reading Is Fun!

In this fun and interactive class, students entering first and second grade will review the basic skills of reading fluency and comprehension. They will practice their reading skills by reading a variety of texts, and they will also learn how to answer basic comprehension questions.

Scratch the Surface of Coding: Are you new to coding? If so, then this is the class to get you on the road to learning how to code! You will be introduced to several sites that take you through the basics of coding. You will also get the chance to create your own projects!

Science Fun!

In this class we will explore the many experiments that science has to offer! This camp will be geared to beginning scientists. We will do a variety of experiments that will get us interested in the many wonderful things we can learn.

Slime Time!: The slime craze continues in this week-long SLIME adventure! Make a new slime every day, learn a science concept or two, and create fun slime projects! Be sure not to wear your favorite outfit...this could get messy!

Come learn and explore the worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics through a new lens, take thoughtful risks, have fun while problem solving, and engage in experimental learning!

STEAMtales: Who doesn't love fairy tales? But have you ever wondered just how did Alice in Wonderland get out of the maze? Or how long and wide was the Billy Goat Gruff's bridge? Or how much air was needed to knock down a house made from straw? Here's your chance to find out! Join us as we explore different fairy tales and use critical thinking and engineering to solve these dilemmas.

STEAM Engine: In this interactive and engaging class, students will be introduced to basic science concepts, such as observation, inference, and prediction. They will be growing their own plants, investigating why some objects sink while others float, and working together with their peers. The class will be a fun way for beginning scientists to develop their curiosities in science and engineering!

Step Up to K: Get ready for the Kindergarten experience at Chesterbrook by Stepping Up this summer! This class is for any student starting Kindergarten in the fall. Get a feel for the experience through stories, group activities, dancing, music, academics, play, and fun!
